The dead are not watching you. They're resting.
Every Halloween season, the culture leans hard into a single idea: that the dead are still around — wandering, watching, waiting to be summoned. It makes for good decorations. It is not what the Bible teaches.
Scripture describes death not as a doorway into a shadowy half-life, but as a sleep — a total, dreamless rest from which only God can wake a person. "The living know that they shall die: but the dead know not any thing... their love, and their hatred, and their envy, is now perished" (Ecclesiastes 9:5-6). The Psalms agree: "His breath goeth forth, he returneth to his earth; in that very day his thoughts perish" (Psalm 146:4). When Jesus stood outside Lazarus's tomb, He didn't describe his friend as a spirit set loose — He called him asleep, and woke him up like waking someone from bed (John 11:11-14). There is no ghost drifting through your house tonight. There is no restless spirit trapped between worlds. There is only a quiet grave, held safely in the memory of a God who promises resurrection — not haunting.
If it isn't the dead speaking — what is?
If the dead know nothing and rest until the resurrection, then every séance, every "message from beyond," every voice claiming to be Grandma is speaking from somewhere else entirely.
The Bible calls this counterfeit by name: spiritualism, sorcery, necromancy — and it warns against it sharply. "There shall not be found among you... a consulter with familiar spirits, or a wizard, or a necromancer" (Deuteronomy 18:10-11), "for they are the spirits of devils, working miracles" (Revelation 16:14). Even King Saul's infamous visit to the witch of Endor didn't summon Samuel's soul from the grave (1 Samuel 28) — it opened a door to a deceiving spirit impersonating him, and it cost Saul dearly. Halloween's ghosts, mediums, and "haunted" tales trade on the same old lie whispered in Eden: "Ye shall not surely die" (Genesis 3:4) — that some part of us lives on, unsupervised, able to speak from the grave. It is a beautifully packaged deception. The truth is both simpler and safer: the dead are asleep in Christ, and anything claiming otherwise is not who it says it is.

The dead linger as ghosts, spirits, or hauntings — restless, aware, sometimes able to be contacted.
The Bible's Story
The dead are asleep, unconscious, waiting for the resurrection — at peace, not present, not watching.
"For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ shall all be made alive... the dead shall be raised incorruptible." — 1 Corinthians 15:22, 52
